My second studio space is the school print studio. I have the studio to myself more often than not as nobody else is working in here very much.

UPDATED - Artist Biography

Kaela Murphy is a biracial artist who grew up in Regina, Saskatchewan, and currently lives and works out of Lethbridge, Alberta. She is currently pursuing a BFA degree in Studio Art from the University of Lethbridge. Murphy's work often includes water-based inks, charcoal, and sometimes her own hair, as she addresses her experiences of being a biracial woman through her work. Her most recent work responds to her experiences of unsolicited commentary and physical interactions with others through the use of public posters. She is interested in utilizing public space to create a public sphere in which people can be presented with an opportunity to identify with, and further understand the concerns of racial microaggressions.

Layering Prints

The L frame has been sealed with acrylic medium for easier cleaning and is prepared for use. I have begun layering my first statement "I AM NOT A PETTING ZOO" overtop the portrait. I am concerned that the red ink will fade and become less visible as it dries, and I am considering doing an initial layer of white for the statement to print over in red once dry for easier visibility. I am also thinking that for future layering statements I would like the words to be larger and take up more space over the portrait to reinforce the idea that I am not making this beautiful portrait to be admired but instead I am looking to interrupt the portrait with a bold, in your face statement.

Newsprint Tests

These are the first several prints I pulled after making the decision to move to newsprint. I've been having issues keeping the images centred on the page or even maintaining a semi-consistent print, so I am going to build an L frame to place the portrait in and line up my paper more consistently
